What is microneedling?

Microneedling is also known as collagen induction therapy. It is a cosmetic procedure that involves repeated micro punctures into the skin with sterile microneedles resulting in micro channels. The micro injury penetrates past the epidermis into the dermis level, activating the fibroblast cells responsible for the production of collagen and elastin. Most products don’t get past the epidermis but with microneedling the products used immediately after, penetrates and gets where it needed. Filing lines and plumping the skin contributing to a more youthful firmer and toned look to the skin. resurFACE uses the highest quality microneedling machine on the market today. Using specific, single use needle cartridges with customized serums for your skin type, results can be seen immediately and full benefits may take a few weeks.

Typical factors found with some cosmetic procedures such as age and skin colour aren’t a factor with microneedling. How many treatments will I need?

Some patients will need only one treatment every 6 months to a year to achieve results. However most patients receive 2 to 5 treatments 4-6 weeks apart. It really depends on the results you’re looking for and the condition of your skin at the beginning of the treatments.

How does controlled skin injury make my skin look better?

Aesthetic medicine today has built the premise ‘hurting’ the skin actually makes it look better. The more invasive the treatment the more dramatic the results will be. Microneedling stimulates the body to heal itself, activating the dormant fibroblast cells in your skins dermis layer that are responsible for the collagen and elastin production.

Is it true microneedling helps product absorption?

Absolutely. Within the first hour of a microneedling treatment, the products you apply afterwards are effectively absorbed by 300%. This is why we want to pair the microneedling treatment with hyaluronic acid. The channels created by the microneedles create a conduit for the product to go straight past the epidermis were most products sit, straight into the dermis layer where they are extremely beneficial.

Is there a difference between dermarolling I can do at home and professional microneedling?

With the availability of derma rollers now it sounds more appealing to do these treatments at home than go to a professional. The problem with derma rollers is they do not make as many channels or penetrate at the depth that a professional derma pen does. A derma roller uses fewer and larger needles and they are more likely to traumatize the skin on the surface because they enter at an angle an exit at an angle, making the hole larger and keeping it more at the surface. Because the derma roller cannot pass through the epidermis into the dermis it does not activate the fibroblast cells responsible for the collagen and elastin, which is why you microneedle in the first place. The professional microneedling pen goes in the skin many more times in a square centimeter and goes in perpendicular, making the channels smaller and less damaging. With the depth of the needles being able to access the dermis layer it can activate your skins own response to heal itself, producing the desired effect of collagen and elastin production.
